"Assessing Sustainable Development: Principles in Practice" is a handbook with advice oriented to help identify unsustainable practices and look for viable alternatives. It was published in 1997 by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) as a result of a gathering in the Rockefeller's Bellagio Conference Centre. The book focuses on choice, implementation and interpretation of indicators that could be useful for assessing sustainable development. It is intended to support and help improve work by governmental and non-governmental organisations and companies in this area.

Four sets of principles underpin the assessment process: 1. defining a vision of sustainable development. 2. the content of an assessment. 3. the assessment process. 4. the needs for capacities for continuous assessments/monitoring. Some case material is presented.
