Dal 14 al 16 ottobre il workshop di rafforzamento delle capacit\u00e0 dedicato ai pescatori artigianali di Yoff, una attivit\u00e0 condotta nel contesto dell’Accademia della Pesca Artigianale in Senegal, ha riunito una trentina di professionisti.<\/span><\/span> Hanno riflettuto sulla loro realt\u00e0, analizzato le loro attivit\u00e0 economiche e identificato misure concrete per migliorare i loro mezzi di sostentamento.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Il workshop ha costituito la seconda opportunit\u00e0 per pescatori, subacquei, grossisti, micro-pescivendoli e pittori di barche di condurre una serie di analisi, esercizi di visualizzazione e sessioni di scambio volti verso una pesca sostenibile.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Durante le sessioni del workshop, i partecipanti hanno elaborato una visione di cosa costituisca per loro una vita felice e un piano d’azione annuale per migliorare i mezzi di sostentamento.<\/span><\/span> Hanno identificato azioni prioritarie per un cambiamento positivo nell’attivit\u00e0 professionale di ciascuno.<\/span><\/span> Inoltre, hanno elaborato collettivamente una panoramica delle avversit\u00e0 socio-ecologiche e dei loro effetti sulla pesca artigianale.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Il workshop ha permesso inoltre ai partecipanti di padroneggiare meglio gli strumenti visivi e di approfondire l\u2019analisi attraverso la pratica, grazie agli esercizi e agli schemi gi\u00e0 utilizzati nel primo workshop di giugno<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Inoltre i partecipanti hanno scambiato opinioni sull’importanza della condividisione con gli altri membri della comunit\u00e0 delle informazioni e dell’apprendimento di cui hanno beneficiato all’interno dell’Accademia.<\/span><\/span> Hanno concordato i prossimi passi che consentiranno loro di sviluppare queste rilevanti competenze per l’emergere della leadership e della governance all’interno del gruppo impegnato nella Small-Scale Fisheries Academy (SSF Academy) a Yoff.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tra le attivit\u00e0 pianificate, i prossimi passi pi\u00f9 importanti sono stati la condivisione di strumenti con i familiari e i gruppi della comunit\u00e0, l’elezione di un ufficio che funzioner\u00e0 come comitato locale dell’accademia a Yoff e che definir\u00e0 un piano di lavoro per l’anno 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The opening session began with a prayer followed by welcome remarks and the self-presentation of the participants.<\/span>\u00a0Then representatives of the local and national committees of the initiative presented the concepts underpinning the small-scale fisheries academy in Senegal and the Guidelines for sustainable small-scale fisheries (SSF Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0– in FR).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The small-scale fisheries academy (SSF academy) in Senegal is a multi-stakeholder platform for free and respectful exchanges, for the co-learning and co-production of knowledge and innovations aimed at marine protection, the sustainable use of marine\u00a0<\/span>and coastal\u00a0resources\u00a0and sustainable artisanal fisheries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequently, the participants carried out visualisation and reflection\u00a0exercises, starting from the drawings and exchange in groups.<\/span>\u00a0They began by defining their vision of a happy life built thanks to their socio-economic activity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A good example of achievements resulting from using the methods was given by Nabia.\u00a0Nabia is a micro-fish vendor from Yoff.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She said: “Before, I only marketed a crate of fish a week.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0During the past three months I stopped buying clothes and wanting a luxury laptop.<\/span>\u00a0I reduced my days of expensive internet connection. Instead of six days a week, I connect twice a week.<\/span>\u00a0I also decreased the loans.<\/span>\u00a0All this together is profitable and helped me to get two crates of fish to market per week. This allowed me to achieve at my goal, set for the first three months in my annual plan.<\/span>\u00a0For clothes I bought a boubou up to 30,000 FCFA to go to baptisms, now I save this amount and I wear clothes already sewn.<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>I’m happy and I would like at the end of one year to have six boxes of fish a week and a bike that will make it easier to transport products<\/em>.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Afterwards, the participants working along the artisanal fisheries value chain conducted an analysis of their professional activity.<\/span>\u00a0Each stakeholder group agreed on the positive effects (yellow) and the challenges (orange) and then identified priority actions (green) to bring about positive change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the second day, each person drew up a plan for the one-year period with actions to complete in order to achieve intermediate objectives set for each three-months period.<\/span>\u00a0The actions consider the current situation, challenges and opportunities according to their own opinion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The concept and the basic ideas of the SSF academy in Senegal stem from the need to find solutions to the various challenges that the actors and actresses of the sector have to confront;<\/span>\u00a0they do\u00a0this, for example,\u00a0through\u00a0the triangulation and comparison of different perspectives.<\/span>\u00a0In doing so, they have taken into consideration the in-depth empirical knowledge of women and men in fisheries, fish processing and marketing, as well as more theoretically supported\u00a0knowledge\u00a0by managers, researchers,\u00a0<\/span>civil society\u00a0organisations<\/span>\u00a0and still others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the third day, the academy hosted Dr. Oumar Di\u00e8ne for an exchange on climate change and its effects on lifestyles in artisanal fisheries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The participants identified socio-environmental adversities experienced in recent decades and their perception of the effects on their economic activities, which ware graphically<\/span>\u00a0recorded in the drawing below.<\/span>\u00a0Among the challenges mentioned by the community were: the increase of the water temperature, the changes in the rainy season, the massive presence of migrants in the area, the increase of the population living in the coastal zone and<\/span>\u00a0which is dependent on artisanal fishing, overfishing and degradation of forest resources.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Picture:<\/strong>\u00a0Among the effects on their way of life, the participants named: the loss of knowledge about the marine species and the sea among the fishermen (young generations and migrants), the need to go further\u00a0every time\u00a0<\/span>for a good catch, the<\/em><\/span>\u00a0reduction of the quantity and variety of fish, among others.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Then, Dr. Di\u00e8ne, who is a geographer specialising in oceanography and the administrative manager of the local NGO APECSY, shared information about the\u00a0platform concerned with the\u00a0environment and management of the living conditions in Yoff.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0is an initiative that brings together 24 socio-professional categories seeking to achieve sustainable development through education and environmental management.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a final activity of the workshop, participants identified next steps for sharing tools used with family members and community groups.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They also decided to form an office that will work as a local committee of the SSF academy in Yoff to set out a work plan for the year 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A couple of participants from the first test workshop in Hann in June joined this second test workshop in Yoff – hopefully as a way to encourage wider practical solidarity between communities.<\/p>\n

The animation team of the workshop was led by Maria Fernanda Arraes Treffner and included, e.g. Mamadou Faye, chair of the local committee in Hann, Khady Mbengue,\u00a0Mbor Thiaw, Marieme Sod Seck and Mamadou Mbaye, chair of the local committee<\/span>\u00a0in Yoff. Aliou Sall, chair of the national committee of the initiative of the SSF academy supported the workshop with inputs about the SSF Guidelines and – as Vice-Chair of\u00a0Mundus maris<\/em>\u00a0– provided key funding.
