Inspired by World Ocean Day celebrations, Babacar Ciss, known as Gabou and an active member of Mundus maris<\/em> in Senegal, together with the Association Sama Sunu Littoral and the grouping of 18 football clubs of the wider Dakar area, convened the ’72 Hours of Young Guardians of the Ocean’ with a special highlight on 28 July 2026 in Hann.<\/p>\n

Call to action<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"The motto was ‘Protect the ocean today, safeguard our future tomorrow’.<\/p>\n

Activities focused notably on youth mobilization, environmental awareness-raising, and hands-on cleanup and waste collection operations.<\/p>\n

These actions helped foster a sense of civic responsibility and demonstrated that sport can serve as a powerful tool for raising awareness and driving environmental engagement.<\/p>\n

A particularly significant outcome of the day was the decision to establish the association \u00abAgir pour les Oc\u00e9ans\u00bb (Acting for the Oceans).<\/p>\n

It aims at sustaining and structuring long-term efforts to protect the marine environment, not a big clean-up drive in the occasion of World Ocean Day, but a regular commitment to help change poor environmental practices by avoiding pollution and more respectful treatment of the natural environment.<\/p>\n

This should entail engaging with a range of administrative structures, schools, civil society organisations and others to push for joint efforts at ocean protection.<\/p>\n

Says Babacar Ciss: \u00abWe extend our sincere thanks to Mundus maris<\/em> and all our partners for their support and commitment to this cause.\u00bb<\/p>\n

\"\"The quantities of garbage collected along the beach are mind-boggling. The picture shows the rows of orange plastic bags filled with any sort of litter picked up during the action day.<\/p>\n

Even the participants were surprised by the volume of waste collected during this operation. This reality highlights the urgent need to take action\u2014not only through cleanup events but also through awareness-raising, environmental education, and the implementation of sustainable solutions to reduce pollution at its source.<\/p>\n

He continued, \u00abIt is with great pleasure and pride that I introduce the executive board of the *Agir pour les Oc\u00e9ans* (Acting for the Oceans) association, established following the \u00ab72 Hours \u2013 Young Guardians of the Ocean\u00bb event.<\/p>\n

We are particularly pleased to have Aliou Sall\u2014an anthropologist specializing in fisheries\u2014among us, serving as our Scientific Advisor.\u00bb<\/p>\n
