Everybody understands that this is not only a matter of administrative rules.<\/p>\n<p>It is about winning the hearts and minds of citizens to create the conditions and to develop the moral purpose and the values necessary to take us collectively out of the crisis and onto a path of rebuilding, healing and enjoying again the beauty and wealth of the oceans and seas. The reform is pointing in the right direction, but has some weaknesses which can best be addressed through broad-based critical engagement of citizens. After all, who &#8216;own&#8217; the fish, if not the public, which needs to exercise stronger stewardship, making better use of research results and working across the spectrum to find robust solutions to the current crisis.<\/p>\n<p>This is why she hosted an event in Athens on March 17, 2014 at \u00abTechnopolis\u00bb Cultural Centre seeking to engage citizens to \u00abLet the juveniles become parents\u00bb. The event took place in the framework of the new pan-European campaign \u2018Inseparable\u2019, which aims at raising awareness on sustainable practices of fishing, consuming and trading as well as on how to build even wider public support for implementing the reformed Common Fisheries Policy. A wide range of stakeholders made it to the event in Athens.<\/p>\n<p>Fishermen, scientists, chefs, fishmongers, teachers, students, consumer and civil society organisations committed to more sustainable ways of fish consumption. Many people may not have fully realised the consequences or even the fact that they were eating babies. Colour pictures of the fish species are printed on the ruler with the Greek name and the indication of the minimum size to facilitate identification and use.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element \" style=\"text-align:center;--awb-liftup-border-radius:0px;--awb-margin-bottom:30px;--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><div class=\"awb-image-frame awb-image-frame-4 imageframe-liftup\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mundusmaris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MM_FishRulerGreece_vert-e1704722475783.jpg\" class=\"fusion-lightbox\" data-rel=\"iLightbox[07aacb90334a3685a21]\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"60\" height=\"1223\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mundusmaris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/MM_FishRulerGreece_vert-e1704722475783.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-1944\"\/><\/a><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p>For some species this biological minimum coincides with the minimum legal landing size determined by an administrative process.<\/p>\n<p>However, worryingly, for quite a number of these species, the minimum legal size is far to small and perversely encourages overfishing of juveniles.<\/p>\n<p>The worst case is the Common Dentex (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishbase.org\/summary\/Dentex-dentex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dentex dentex<\/a><\/em>): it is legal to land baby Dentex at a length of only 8 cm, while the biological minimum is 42,5 cm, more than five times bigger!<\/p>\n<p>Some other species do not fare much better. Among them are the Reg porgy (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishbase.org\/summary\/Pagrus-pagrus.html\"><em>Pagrus pagrus<\/em><\/a>), which should be 37 cm long, more than twice the minimum legal landing size of 18 cm, and the two mackerel species (Atlantic chub mackerel &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishbase.de\/summary\/Scomber-colias.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Scomber colias<\/em><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; and the Atlantic mackerel &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishbase.org\/summary\/Scomber-scombrus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Scomber scombrus<\/em><\/a>), allowed to be landed at 18 cm, while maintaining a healthy population requires a minimum biological size of more than 27 cm.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element awb-imageframe-style awb-imageframe-style-below awb-imageframe-style-5\" style=\"text-align:center;--awb-margin-bottom:30px;--awb-caption-margin-top:10px;--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--body_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--body_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--body_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:14px;--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--body_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:1.5em;--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:0.5px;\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-5 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mundusmaris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Kids_Stand01.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-1939\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mundusmaris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Kids_Stand01-200x144.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.mundusmaris.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Kids_Stand01.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/span><div class=\"awb-imageframe-caption-container\"><div class=\"awb-imageframe-caption\"><div class=\"awb-imageframe-caption-title\">Kids picking up fish rulers and other tools at the FishBase and HCMR stand<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p>Realising this, we all understand much better, why fish resources in Greece have all but collapsed and thus fish prices are at an all-time-high. The demand to the authorities is therefore to align the minimum legal landing size immediately to the biological minimum and establish marine protected areas for nature and the marine ecosystems to heal and rebuild themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Greek fish lovers, children and tourists will love it to see the fish come back in good abundance \u2013 the fishers themselves should seize the straw offering a future to their profession or hobby. Fish rulers have been distributed to the wide audience that participated in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers and pupils expressed their excitement and great interest in using the fish ruler for educational purposes\u00a0and everyday usage at home as a tool to make sure they only consume adult fish.\u00a0The fish ruler was also a very important tool for chefs to use at the Chefs&#8217; School while educating students and as a necessary tool of their cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Fishermen present in the event have also expressed their interest for its practical usage on the boat, commenting that the fish rulers could have had a sticker on the back side for easier way to collate on the boat (this is a welcome idea for further improvement of the next edition). In the meantime, we trust their ingenuity to find a solution for fixing it themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Greek schoolchildren, together with \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachers4europe.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teachers 4 Europe<\/a>\u2019, were there to ask their parents, teachers and\u00a0policy makers to take the \u2018No Juveniles\u2019 message seriously, and displayed videos, artwork and presentations to support the work they created.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u2018<strong>Know<\/strong>\u2019 area, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research raised public awareness on sustainability and disseminated educational material to children.
